I don''t know any other singer/rocker who is so rockin'' hard, but still accessible, with a good voice and a killer guitarist (Steve Stevens) normally nearby. "World''s Forgotten Boy", IMHO, totally competes with "Rebel Yell" as his best rockin'' song! Yet, Idol can put out coolness and haunting atmosphere like "Beyond Belief" and "One Night, One Chance". This album is kind of like Seal''s second album, where, commercially, only one song really gets attention (Kiss From A Rose), when in fact the whole album is really fantastic. But in this case, it''s Idol''s "To Be A Lover" that got all the attention on this album, meanwhile all the other jewels and diamonds pretty much got forgotten. Definitely recommend this album for all rockers and 80''s lovers.

****1/2 World''s Forgotten Boy. Kick-ass emotive rocker starts things off on a strong note.

****1/2 To Be a Lover. This boogying cover song is terrific, but no better than much of the other material here.

**** Stars Soul Standing By. Very good album track - pounding atmospheric rocker falls just short of a potential hit.

****1/2 Sweet Sixteen. Touching acoustic number was another MTV hit, always was a favorite of mine.

****1/2 Man For All Seasons. Dark heavy rocker with that switches into a great jazz breakout midway through showing Billy and Steve''s experimental side - it really works.

****1/2 Don''t Need a Gun. Another great song that was a minor hit features some dramatic cinematic flourishes from guest session keyboard wizard Harold Faltermeyer (Fletch theme) and more great soloing from Stevens.

****1/2 Beyond Belief. A touchingly emotive Idol, strong melody, and a spine chilling solo from Stevens makes this song great.

**1/2 Fatal Charm. Generic rocker lacks a good hook and offers nothing compelling besides the usual good performances from Billy and Steve. BI could have found something better for this slot, a cover of some past hit if nothing else.

****1/2 All Summer Single. Not sure why this wasn''t a hit - catchy backbeat with strong performances from Idol (as always), Stevens and Faltermeyer.

***1/2 One Night, One Chance. Not a hard rocker, a pretty good song but is a bit meandering and never hits a climax - second weakest on the album.

This CD doesn''t have any iconic hits like White Wedding, Rebel Yell and Eyes Without A Face, the songs that made made Idol a superstar, although To Be a Lover was a popular MTV hit. But the depth and variety of material and improved playing from Steve Stevens make this as good or even a little better than the predecessor Rebel Yell CD overall. I like this from start to finish just as much as Greatest Hits, as most of the songs here are much better than some of Billy''s somewhat lame earlier hits like Dancing With Myself or Catch My Fall.

I am a big fan of Billy Idol and feel that "Whiplash Smile" is his best work. I also think it is the best quality of sound also, especially on album. I highly recommend this album for those who love 80''s music, rock, and Billy Idol.

Many say this is Idol''s best album. It could well be. That rating may be for personal preference, but what this album most definitely is, is good rock and roll fun. In the mid 80''s Idol''s contemporaries were rather moody with a penchant for the dark side embodied in the Gothic movement of the day or they glitzy heavy rockers. Idol was somewhere between the two. On the one hand you had the likes of The Cult who produced rousing exciting songs like ''She Sells Sanctuary'' and ''Rain'' as the obvious two; but The Cult were never fun. Then there was The Mission, mystical but not ''beat-averse'', again though, hardly fun. Sisters of Mercy denied being Gothic but totally failed to be believed in that, and were extremely ''un-fun''. On the other hand you had Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, strutting around with massive hair and massive guitar riffs and massive drum solos, not to mention massive vocal chords; all well and good. Idol had the chains and the leather and the pouting look, but Idol brought fun, Idol was more interested in rock and roll. Steve Stevens guitar could pump as loud and majestic as anything that Billy Duffy or Phil Collen could produce. Idol was not trying to entice you to the underworld, but neither was he trying to make you bigger than you are. Idol was saying its ok to be you, but you have to stand up; in All Summer Single Idol sings ''Eight o''clock in the morning, babe, Gonna wipe that dirt, shake that sweat, Wipe that, shake it, lose the blues right now.'' He encourages more in One Night, One Chance with ''Woke up in the morning, I said boy wake up / Nothing will be done if you don''t get up / Silence is guilty and the truth can talk / If you got the legs boy, come on let''s walk There is energy, and craftsmanship in this fine example of Idol''s work, from the thump you get at the start, the melodic ballad of Sweet Sixteen to the brooding One Night, One Chance. Throughout is the classic 50''s rock and roll theme of boy meets girl who outclasses him, and the variations on the theme do not falter. There should always be a place in the world for the likes of Billy Idol, for when in a hole the Goths would only help you dig deeper, and the ''Metallists'' would taunt from the top, but Idol? Idol would throw you down a rope..... ''Nothing will be done if you don''t get up''

Billy Idol''s snarling vocals combined with Steve Stevens guitar wizardry created one of the most distinctive sounds of the eighties. This particular album must be Billy Idol''s greatest achievement. There are ten tracks and every one has a certain quality. The Steve Stevens guitar solo in "Don''t Need a Gun" is legendary and everyone remembers the catchy lyrics of "To Be a Lover". The only let down is the lethargic "One Night, One Chance". My own favourite is "Man For All Seasons". If I had to compile a soundtrack to my life, this track would be on it. 1986 is along time ago but fans of Billy Idol really should own this. For younger listeners discovering the sounds of the eighties for the first time this disc is highly recommended.
